Survive the Zombie Apocalypse with Cardio

2020 has been one hell of a year – Murder hornets, Kobe Bryant and Coronavirus (among others). All of this of course is just a buildup to the Zombie Apocalypse (you know it’s coming!).

So, we thought we’d share our Zombie Apocalypse survival strategy with you – Cardio!

Before we proceed, let’s do a quick overview on zombies. Zombies are corpses brought back to life by some mechanism (a virus, voodoo etc.), with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. They are nigh impervious – usually they can only be killed by destroying their brains or blowing them to pieces. The classic zombie is a slow, shambling corpse, dangerous in large numbers only. But in recent years we have seen the rise of faster moving variants; and even some capable of using weapons (thanks Netflix).

So, what would you do if you encountered a zombie? You’d run! Hence our survival strategy – Cardio!

Now let us get you into top shape so you never have to worry about being torn apart by these ravenous corpses. Follow these 3 tips and you should be fine:


1. Run

The number one thing you need to do is engage your feet. Get moving – hit the road and squeak some takkie. 

The strategy here is all based off your current cardio base. Do you have a love affair with your couch? Or are you a top ten finisher in the Gobi 500? If you are carrying a few extra kilo’s then you will need to start slow. Work your way up to a 5km run over 8 weeks. Try running four times a week with one speed session, 2 medium distance runs, and one longer run mixed in. 2. Get a fitness tracker

Progress management is the name of the game when it comes to getting fitter. How much further did you run than last week? How much faster did you run per kilometer? What activity band is your heart rate falling in?

A good fitness tracker answers all these questions, and helps you get fitter and stronger from week to week. Consider a decent Fitbit watch to help you take your cardio to the next level.

For beginner runners the Fitbit Inspire 2 is a great watch. It tracks heart rate 24/7 and monitors activity zones. Sleep tracking is also included. The one let down is the lack of a GPS – but that means less energy consumption allowing for an excellent 10-hour battery life.

The Fitbit Versa 2 is Fitbit’s Smart Watch offering. It has all the functionality of the Aspire 2, along with the ability to play music and run android apps. The Fitbit Versa 3 ups its game by including GPS functionality.

The Fitbit Sense is Fitbit’s premium offering. It is marketed as a health watch, and it includes an EDA sensor – a device that picks up sweat secretions – for pinpoint accuracy in activity. It also includes an ECG program to monitor your heart activity and health. It even monitors your stress levels.

Garmin is also an option. The Garmin Vivoactive 4S is the ideal watch for running addicts; this smart watch boasts up to 7 days battery life, and comes pre-loaded with over 20 fitness apps.  It is also highly water resistant.

The Garmin Forerunner 935 offers some of the most accurate GPS tracking across all fitness devices. It includes tracking via GLONASS and Galileo satellites. While the Vivoactive 4S is geared towards a variety of sports, the Forerunner 935 is all about running.

The Vivomove Style is Garmin’s hybrid watch offering. It boasts a sleek design. It is a more entry level device that lacks GPS tracking but can still track steps and distance, calories etc.


3. Nutrition

More activity means more calories. More calories mean more food. Protein is a must for ensuring you don’t wither away and become a very fit raisin. But vitamins and minerals are vital for maintaining health and ensuring you stick with your running program.
